Jornadas na Sorbonne

Study Day “Se filmer et se regarder dans le miroir: L’usage de l’éscriture de soi par des femmes documentaristes en langue portugaise” [Filming Yourself and Seeing Yourself in the Mirror: the use of self-writing by Portuguese-speaking documentary filmmakers], at the Sorbonne University.

A Study Day entirely dedicated to the SPECULUM project: Filming Yourself and Seeing Yourself in the Mirror: The use of self-writing by Portuguese-speaking documentary filmmakers (EXPL/ART-CRT/0231/2021) took place on June 9th in room D421 of the Research Centre at Sorbonne University in Paris.

The afternoon sessions began with a description of the project by its main coordinator, Ana Catarina Pereira (LabCom | UBI), and continued with contributions from Jorane de Castro, filmmaker, who revealed the initial images of her film Terruá Pará [Pará Terroir] (unpublished), and from Paula Halperin (SUNY), who brought considerations around two films by Petra Costa. The last presentation was given by Ana Isabel Soares (CIAC | UAlg), who explained the process of her research into Hymne d'Amour [Love Anthem] (Isabella Kent, 1979-1991), in the presence of the director’s nephew. The filmmaker passed away in 2022.

As sessões da tarde iniciaram com a descrição do projeto, feita pela sua coordenadora principal, Ana Catarina Pereira (LabCom | UBI), e prosseguiram com contributos de Jorane de Castro, cineasta, que revelou as imagens iniciais do seu filme Terruá Pará 8inédito) e de Paula Halperin (SUNY), que trouxe considerações em torno de dois filmes de Petra Costa. A última apresentação esteve a cargo de Ana Isabel Soares (CIAC | UAlg), que deu a ver o processo da sua investigação acerca de Hymne d’Amour (Isabella Kent, 1979-1991), na presença do sobrinho da realizadora, falecida em 2022.

The day was marked by excellent debates. An interested and multiple audience contributed to the success of the event, learning about this project that is based at the University of Beira Interior, in the north of Portugal, but which brings together researchers from various parts of the world.

About the Speculum team
The Study Day, named after the research project, was attended by relevant SPECULUM research members, namely the researcher responsible for the project, PhD Ana Catarina Pereira, assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters at UBI, who carried out an online presentation with the title “Speculum: the genesis of a project focused on filmed autobiography”. The co-investigator responsible for the project, PhD Ana Isabel Soares, assistant professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at UAlg, who presented “Hymne d’amour: Mirror of a filial love”; and PhD Eduardo Paz Barroso, full professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at UFP, and integrated member of LabCom. He presented “Deserving life – Matriarchy and autobiography in a documentary by Margarida Leitão”.
