Podcast
Among the tasks proposed by Speculum, creating interview podcasts with directors and other guests whose work is related to cinema is a valuable mission. These sessions are a gate through which we can have access to the work methods performed in the making of the films, the creation process of each of the filmmakers and the knowledge of those who analyze and study their works. Eduardo Paz Barroso, research member of Speculum and Full Professor of Communication Sciences at FCHS (the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences) at University Fernando Pessoa, in Porto, interviews the writer, critic, poet, and playwright Pedro Mexia. In this conversation they focus on the presence of women in cinema, both behind and in front of the cameras. At the same time, they reflect upon the history of women's cinema and women’s place as voyeuristic objects in the more largely commercial cinema made by men. Autobiographical film directed by women is also a theme discussed in this episode, and it is presented as a contemporary contribution to opening new perspectives in the horizon of Portuguese, Brazilian, and global cinema. Rita Capucho - researcher at Speculum, co-director, and co-founder of the Porto Femme film festival - interviews Brazilian director and screenwriter Joana Oliveira. Their conversation focused on the filmmaker's most recent autobiographical feature film, which highlights the value of friendship between women. Kevin, a documentary released in 2021, focuses on Joana's visit to her friend Kevin, in Uganda. The two friends first met 20 years earlier, when they both lived in Germany. Professor Pedro Pinto de Oliveira (UFMT), a research member of Speculum, talks to Lilian Solá Santiago, the first black documentary filmmaker to have a documentary released in a movie theater in Brazil. The interviewee combines the roles of mother, researcher, and teacher in the audiovisual area. In the interview, the autobiographical film in development Pega a Laço [Tie-down roping] stands out. The film is about the director's journey with Dandara, her daughter, in search of an indigenous ancestor. The interview included the collaboration of journalist Julia Gabriella Nogueira Munhoz, a PhD student in Contemporary Culture Studies at UFMT, and was produced in partnership with A Produtora Filmes and PNB Online. The professor and researcher in charge of the Speculum project (LabCom/FCT), Ana Catarina Pereira, talks to the Portuguese director Margarida Leitão, professor (ESTC) and integral member of the aforementioned project. In the interview, the focus of attention lies on the film Gypsophila (2015), about Margarida Leitão's relationship with her grandmother. Sociologist and professor Catarina Sales (UBI) interviews Brazilian filmmaker Tila Chitunda. The conversation focuses on the autobiographical documentaries made by Tila Chitunda, in her search for an encounter with her own identity, as a descendant of Angolans.
