Speculum International Congress: Autobiographical cinema directed by women in Portugal and in Brazil
The First Speculum International Congress is organized within the project with the same name and wider designation “Speculum - Filming and looking at oneself. The use of self-writing by Portuguese speaking documentary filmmakers”, sponsored by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (EXPL/ART-CRT/0231/2021), and is developed in Beira Interior University.
The research focuses on the self-writing some filmmakers use as a methodology of artistic and documentary creation. The aim is to present the research underway by the project team, and the Congress intends to discover and dialogue with different investigators and different research developed in the same area. Recognizing that the number of women filming documentaries is increasing significantly, we reaffirm that the reality contradicts historical and universal evidence, mainly as far as fiction is concerned. The documentary cinema constitutes thus a field where different women often direct and produce with more relevance over the recent years.
The definitions of woman and documentary used throughout our research are inclusive and all-encompassing, encouraging sorority and ideals of empathy. The team in the Speculum Project develops research after Film, Literary, Cultural and Gender Studies, from an intersectional and humanist perspective and is profoundly respectful of human rights.
